Municipality says residents are not drinking infested water

The Randfontein local municipality says raw sewage being dumped in the Tweelopiespruit is not affecting residents.

The Randfontein Local Municility spokesperson has slammed allegations that raw sewage is being dumped into a local stream published in the Herald dated 28 June and says this is far from the truth.

This despite the fact that the Herald has seen, first hand, the sewage flowing into the stream.

The stream in question is the Tweelopiespruit situated on te outskirts of the North Way extension.

According to Municipal spokesperson Lucky Chiya, this is incorrect information and the municipality has things very well under control at the sewerage plant.

“It is incorrect to allege that the spruit is infested with feces emanating from our sewerage plant because as per procedure, our water goes through all the cleaning processes.

“Apart from that, it is also misleading to say that the people who live along the banks consume the water because we as the municipality provide them with clean water through water tanks,” says Chiya.

He adds that one has to keep in mind that the plant is over thirty years old, hence it experiences breakdowns regularly.

“Owing to the condition of the plant, the municipality has allocated R2 million for refurbishment and to attend to emergency breakdowns,” says Chiya.

He also admits that this amount is not enough for the upkeep of the plant but says that the municipality is in the process of securing funds from the relevant department within the province to assist with the total refurbishment of the plant.
