Toekomsrus residents staying on Ruby Street are up arms over a veld behind their houses that has turned into an illegal dumping site and a hideaway spot for criminals.
Apart from the nappies and the unwanted household items thrown into the veld from time to time, residents are angered by the tall grass that is apparently taller than their houses.
According to resident Gerald Samson, it is ridiculous that the municipality would leave the grass to grow so tall forgetting the impact it might have on residents.
“It is upsetting that we are made to live in such conditions knowing very well that we pay our rates and taxes.
“Not only is this place filthy but it is dangerous as well.
“Owing to this, we are subjected to living next to stinking place and being prisoners in our own homes because we obviously fear that our houses will be broken into or that we will one day be victimised,” says Samson.
He adds that a house robbery recently occurred a few blocks from his house and owing to the tall grass, the community could not chase after the suspect despite knowing that they ran into the veld during their escape.
“I have reported the matter to the Randfontein Local Municipality and even went as far as doing follow-ups after no one attended to my complaint.
“However despite my efforts, to date, no one has shown any intentions of attending to the matter.
“This is a clear indication that the municipality lacks commitment towards addressing resident’s complaints as well as improving the state of the town.
Municipal spokesperson Lucky Chiya was not immediately available for comment.
