Randfontein residents have slammed the Randfontein Local Municipality for misleading them by calling for a public participation by-law meeting and then not showing up.
The meeting was scheduled on 28 June at the IEC Hall in Randfontein and residents say that they flocked to the meeting but found no one at the municipal building.
They allege that upon their arrival, security guards placed at the building informed them that the meeting had been cancelled and advised that they return home.
The municipality had advertised the meetings on posters placed at the municipal buildings next to pay counters.
According to Cope representative Nicodemus Phake, he, together with other Cope committee members flocked to the event but were shocked to find all doors locked and no sign of any meeting whatsoever.
‘There were never any posters pertaining to the cancellation of the event,” says a furious Phake.
“This is ridiculous.
“Many of the community members that showed up for the meeting did so despite their limited means.
“This should serve as proof that the municipality does not care for Randfontein residents,” says Phake.
Randfontein Local Municipality Spokesperson Lucky Chiya has denied that no-one from the municipality showed up for the meeting, saying that when municipal representatives showed up for the meeting, there was no one from the public there.
He says that he suspects there was a mix up with regard to the scheduled time for the meeting.
