Meet Randfontein’s very own youth council

Our purpose is to voice the plight of the youth and propose ways of addressing their challenges.

The Randfontein Local Municipal now has a new youth executive council in office in the form of a youth Executive Mayor Naledi Sekokodi, Chief whip Rosemary Matabane and Speaker Ayabulela Mhlahlo.

The trio was elected into the council on 15 June during a youth debate between the 11 schools in the region at the council chambers where problematic issues among the youth were discussed.

Together, they are tasked with bringing forth the struggles of the youth and proposing ways of combating them in council.

According Sekokodi, it is an honour to be chosen to represent the youth of Randfontein and she says that they will do their best to assist where they can.

“Our purpose is to voice the plight of the youth and to propose ways of addressing their challenges as well as that of South African citizens in totality.

“Through shadowing the relevant people in council, we will be equipped with the necessary knowledge on how to fulfill our mandate in terms of not only bringing problems to the table, but providing solutions as well,” says Sekokodi.

Matabane and Mhlahlo share the same sentiments and say that during their time in office, they want to bring change and get rid of the ignorant attitude among the youth.

Also on their to do list, is to instill a culture of not only dreaming about becoming great but working towards it.

“We have established that there really is a gap in terms of communicating job opportunities as well as learnerships and internships to the youth.

“This is because almost everything is on the internet and not everyone has access to that.

“It is our duty to bridge this gap because there is a lot of unemployed youth.
