Youth desk unites against substance abuse

One can take away everything from you but they can never take away your education.

The Westonaria Youth Desk is once again calling on the youth and members of the community to help them fight the scourge of illegal substance abuse in their communities.

This comes after local authorities have identified the youth to be increasingly consuming alcohol, marijuana and other illegal substances.

According to a member of the Youth Desk Phumza Ntsanda, their organization is currently working towards combating social ills such as those mentioned above.

“We have noted the challenges that the youth face in terms of alcohol abuse, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and so forth.

“In turn, we have decided to extend a helping hand in terms of providing a support structure for children who are really stuck between a rock and a hard place,” says Ntsanda.

She adds that the Youth Desk does this through motivational speaking in local high schools in Westonaria as well as awareness campaigns where they also engage with learners on a one-on-one basis.

“In most cases we find that the only thing that these children need is love and affection and they go about it the wrong way.

“We are here to show them that they cannot find comfort in substance abuse.

“We work hand in hand with the police but they should not fear this partnership because even the police are dedicated to saving lives and helping people.”

According to Ntsanda, they have also partnered with the Westonaria Social Crime Prevention Unit in order to intensify their fight against the scourge of substance abuse among the youth.

The Westonaria Youth Desk committee is stationed at the Westonaria police station and can be contacted on 011 278 5331.
