Randgate residents together with DA Ward Councilor Sina Erasmus are frustrated and up in arms about the theft of municipal property such as manhole covers and stops signs, particulaly on the corner of Stegman Street and Tudhope Street in Randgate.
The intersection in question is without a stop sign and the road signage on the street has faded to being almost invisible.
According to Erasmus, it is only a matter of time before a major accident occurs at this busy intersection owing to the poor markings and the failure to replace the missing stop sign.
“The theft of municipal property is a persistent problem in Randfontein, yet the council still does not attend to it.
“This despite the fact that residents and councilors constantly report these things so they cannot say that they are not aware,” says Erasmus.
She adds that the council has been all talk but no action in this regard.
“We have reported this problem and to date nothing has been done.
“We are often told that they will replace the stolen items but they never really get to it.
“I wish they would take this as an urgent matter and address it as such.
“We don’t want to lose lives owing to a situation that could have been avoided,” says Erasmus.
Previously, the Randfontein Local Municipality spokesperson Lucky Chiya said that the council is in the process of replacing municipal property that has been stolen.
The Herald has once again contacted Chiya, who was not immdiately available for comment.
