Violence awareness campaign a success
Societies consider other matters of abuse as 'private' affairs and therefore acceptable.
In reaction to a major increase in gender based violence and domestic violence cases in many communities in Randfontein, the Government Communication and Information System in conjunction with Randfontein SAPS and the Department of Public Safety launched a massive awareness campaign.
This was on 17 July at the corner of Main Reef Road and the Zuuberkom Road in Randfontein.
According to the senior communications officer from the Government Communication and Information System Tshidi Mokoka, this is a much needed intervention from the relevant authorities considering the rate of violence in Randfontein.
“It is no secret that women and children still fall victim to domestic violence daily.
“The problem has escalated and even men are abused from time to time
“The underlying problem seems to be the fact that most societies consider such matters of abuse as ‘private’ affairs and therefore acceptable and do not report such crimes.
“Through this initiative, we want to say that we will not tolerate this and urge people to report such crimes.” says Mokoka.
She adds that in an effort to address this, they have decided to do distribute informative pamphlets to passers-by and motorists with the aim to get the message across.
“By this we hope to create the much needed awareness as to what constitutes to domestic violence and promote the reporting thereof,”
“At no point must people think that being abused is a personal or private matter.
“We urge that such crimes be reported and people start having confidence in the justice system.
“We are all working toward one goal and that is to bring such crimes to a halt.
