The West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) together with the Gauteng Department of Community Safety embarked on a plot numbering campaign in the rural areas in Randfontein on 20 July.
This was to set up visible house numbering in the households in plots such as Brandvlei, Elandsfontein and Tarlton.
According to the WRDM spokesperson Dennis Mangope, the lack of visible numbering at the houses in the plots previously hampered on reaction time in emergency cases and contributed to fatalities that could have been avoided.
“We have come to realise that, emergency personnel found it rather difficult to access these areas in cases of emergencies due to the lack of visibility of addresses in the plots.
“We have noted the hardships of such areas and we will be working around the clock to solve this problem.
“Owing to this, we as the District together with other relevant departments will address this matter and we already have started with the numbering of plots.
“So far we have numbered over 70 houses with the help of municipal workers.
“We simply cannot have more fatalities owing to this problem.
“It is something that can be fixed and we will be doing just that,” says Mangope.
