Allegations of fraud within the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) have surfaced and have apparently resulted in at least three resignations so far within the Finance Department as investigators close in on the guilty parties.
The Herald can reveal that numerous WRDM employees within the finance department have been implicated in alleged financial irregularities amounting to at least R5 million according to Municipal Manager David Mokoena, but an anonymous source within the municipality has told the Herald that the amount is closer to R15 million.
The Herald is also in possession of the names of five other employees who have been implicated, although, according to Mokoena, only one person has so far been positively linked to the fraudulent transactions.
“An accounts clerk within the Finance Department was found to have been depositing municipal funds totalling R5 million into her private account since 2007.
“She has since admitted her guilt.
“Other people implicated at this stage are still under investigation and we cannot comment on that.
“The police are busy investigating and we are also running an independent investigation.
“Once our investigations are concluded, we will, depending on the outcome, decide what action should be taken,” says Mokoena.
