Westonaria denies wadteful expenditure claims

These figures come as a result of people settling their payments late with the Municipality.

The Westonaria Local Municipality has fired back with comment after having been accused of wastefully and fruitlessly spending millions of rands, by saying the expenditure was unavoidable.

The Herald published an article on 2 August based on the Auditor General Terrence Nombembe’s report for the financial year 2011 and 2012.

According to the report, the Westonaria Local Municipality wasted a whopping 5,8 per cent of its budget while Randfontein Local Municipality wasted 5,4 per cent.

According to Westonaria municipal spokesperson Kgabane Madiehe, it is incorrect to classify this under wasteful expenditure.

“People need to understand that these figures come as a result of people settling their payments late with the Municipality.

“At no point does this constitute wasteful expenditure.

“We have noted the troubles we keep having and we are working on a feasible solution,” says Madiehe.
