W/rea Mayor honours boxers

I cannot stress how proud we are of these boys.

The Westonaria Local Municipality Executive Mayor Nonkoliso Tundzi congratulated six boxers from the Bekkersdal informal settlement on their recent achievements.

This comes after the boxers came out tops at the recent Western Gauteng Championship Tournament and managed to scoop both gold and silver medals.

Phumlani Maphalla, Sifiso Nqewu, Aeageng Galeboe, Alex Matlaila, Joseph Thovela and Thabiso Sakwane are the six boxers honoured by Tundzi.

According to her, there is a need to intensify council’s efforts in supporting sportsmen throughout Westonaria.

“I cannot stress how proud we are of these boys.

“They, together with other sportsmen continue to show us that nothing can stand between you and your dreams.

“Let their achievements be proof of this and I hope that the youth will take this and follow suit,” says Tundzi.

According to Westonaria MMC for Health and Social Development Councilor Annah Gela, the boxers are among the many sportsmen who will continue to put Westonaria on the map.

“We have produced many stars from all sporting areas through our development structures.

“Therefore we realize that there is a dire need to increase our support in terms of infrastructure and facilities,” says Gela.

Previously, the boxers used the Paul Nel Gymnasium in Bekkersdal for training.

According to Gela, the facility was built by council in order to revive and develop sports in the area.

“We are truly happy to see our investments in sports development paying off.

“Now it rests upon them to make a success of themselves because the facilities are there,” says Gela.

Currently, the boxers are preparing for the next Olympic Games and pleads with anyone who wishes to donate boxing kits or anything along those lines to contact their coaches Joseph Dlangamandla on 078 250 8286 or Victor Khota on 072 371 9766.
