The West Rand District Municipality hosted a regional women’s economic empowerment seminar in Mohlakeng on 23 August.
This forms part of the District’s celebrations of Women’s Month – August.
According to District spokesperson Dennis Mangope, they have identified numerous challenges in societies affecting women.
“We acknowledge that the government has great opportunities for women but still more needs to be done.
“More focus needs to be put on issues pertaining to economic empowerment and women and children abuse among other pressing issues.
“Through this seminar the District together with the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP) aim to reach women in Randfontein from all walks of life with hopes of encouraging them to speak up about their challenges.
“Be it those they encounter in their home or those they come across in their society, we are here to assist,” says Mangope.
According to West Rand District Muncipality Executive Mayor Mpho Nawa, the turnout was amazing as approximately 300 women attended the event.
“It is disappointing, however, that women from the SAPS and the Department of Justice were not present.
“These departments are central in the protection of our women, but we are positive that in future they will be able to join us,” says Nawa.
