An approximately 50-year-old man, who was pulled over on suspicion of drunken driving, tried to run away from traffic officers on 30 August, leaving his two grandchildren behind to fend for themselves.
According to Randfontein Traffic Chief, Kenny Mampondo, the man was pulled over after officers spotted him driving erratically along the R28 between Randfontein and Krugersdorp.
“Traffic Officers Rebecca Molibedi and Gladys Mokhele stopped the suspect in order to check whether everything was fine,” says Mampondo.
“He had his 4-year-old granddaughter and his 16-year-old grandson in the car with him at the time.
“While officers was trying to convince him to take a breathalyser test, he suddenly took off running, leaving his grandchildren at the scene.
“The officers gave chase and caught up with the man a short distance away.”
According to Mampondo, the officers then forced the man to do the test, which showed that he was way beyond the legal limit of 0.05ml, coming in at 0.98ml.
He adds that the children’s next of kin were called out to the scene to take both the deserted children and the vehicle home.
The man was arrested.
