Four suspects were caught and arrested for the theft of copper cables at the Goldfields and Kloof mines in Westonaria on 14 September.
The weight of the cables is currently unknown but officers say the cable is worth approximately R500.
According to Westonaria SAPS spokesperson Thembi Masango, the suspects were caught by security officers at the two mines.
“Three suspects were caught red handed trespassing on Kloof mine’s property.
“A search was carried out on the men and they were found with copper cables in their possession,” says Masango.
She adds that the fourth suspect was nabbed at the Goldfields mine premises and was found in possession of stolen cables as well.
“Despite the amount that the copper cables are worth, it is worth noting that the damage is substantial.
“When people steal cables worth R500 the damage thereof can amount to millions of rands,” says Masango
The suspect in question made their first appearance at the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court today (16 September).
Their cases have been remanded for a bail application in the near future.
