Westonaria Police have confiscated over 100 counterfeit CD’s in Westonaria and surrounds and say that the illegal trade is getting out of hand.
This was during one of their intensive stop-and-search operations where numerous hawkers stationed on street corners were caught selling the counterfeit goods on 14 September.
According to Westonaria SAPS spokesperson Thembi Masango, the trade in counterfeit items is a nationwide problem.
“People need to understand that there are rules and regulations they need to abide by.
“They cannot just illegally copy people’s work and distribute it for personal income.
“It is against our law and that is that,” says Masango.
She adds that those who buy counterfeit items are just as guilty as those selling them.
“I cannot stress how important it is for people to stop buying bootlegged items.
“One way or the other, they are not only taking away from someone’s hard work.
“They are crippling our economy,” says Masango.
