A 21-year-old woman has been arrested and faces charges of attempted murder after she was positively linked to a new born baby that was dumped in a pit toilet at the Tambo informal settlement in Bekkersdal on 28 October.
The baby was found by a neighbour in the early hours of the morning who heard the baby screaming and decided to investigate.
She made the shocking discovery and decided to call for help.
Upon other resident’s arrival at the scene, the two managed to rescue the baby from the toilet and called the police.
Meanwhile, a group of women decided to go and look for a woman they suspected of the act.
They eventually came upon her at her house where she was bleeding heavily and appeared to have just given birth.
According to Westonaria SAPS spokesperson Constable Thembi Masango, the woman was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital where she was treated.
The baby still had its umbilical cord attached to it and was also taken to hospital.
Shortly after her recovery, the woman was arrested and detained in the police cells.
“We have charged the woman with attempted murder and she appeared in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on 30 October,” says Masango.
