Mayor hosts International day of elders in Toekomsrus

Children need to realize that disrespecting people will not get them anywhere in life.

The West Rand District Municipality Executive Mayor Mpho Nawa in partnership with Age in Action celebrated International Day of the Elderly People in Toekomsrus on 31 October

The day is recognized on 1 October.

This was to show appreciation to the elderly people in the community and urge the youth to love, respect and be helpful towards them at all times

According to Nawa, there seems to be moral decay among the youth and most of them tend not to respect their parents, let alone their grandparents.

“Children need to realize that disrespecting people will not get them anywhere in life.

“It pains me to hear of incidents were children backchat their elders whenever they are in the wrong.

“This is not what we were taught when growing up and I am totally against it.

“Some of us are where we are today because of their teachings and the upbringing we received from them.

“In most cases, they are the pillar of strength in their own families but most importantly in their communities.

“We need to come to realise this and appreciate them for everything they have done,” says Nawa.

He adds that the youth needs to preserve and protect the rights of the elderly people and assist them where they can.

Attendants at the event where given food parcels as a show of appreciation.
