Police shuts down illegal shebeen

Police send out warning after confiscating 300 litres of alcohol during raid.

Local police has sent out a clear message and warning to those trading in alcohol illegally after having shut down an illegal shebeen in an informal settlement next to a dumping site in Westergloor.

A Randfontein Police officer on scene confirmed that about 300 litres of African traditional beer – also known as sorghum beer – were confiscated following a police operation during which they raided shebeens in Randfontein, Mohlakeng and Toekomsrus.

“We were doing our operations on the day when we decided to raid a woman’s property near the dumping site where alcohol was said to be sold. There we found more than 30 two-litre bottles filled with sorghum beer and drums of beer.

“Although we did not arrest the woman, we did send out a clear message where alcohol trading is concerned and took all of her stock,” says the officer who adds that the police cannot emphasise enough how important it is to abide by the laws of this country as far as the trading of liquor is concerned.

The officer says those found to be on the wrong side of the law will face the music.
