The Democratic Alliance (DA) is disappointed that the Gauteng Department of Community Safety only plans to finalise a strategy to tackle the drug scourge by 31 December 2014.
“This after a response to written questions from us,” DA spokesperson on Community Safety Michele Clarke said.
“This is despite escalating incidents of drug-related crime across the province and many communities taking to the streets in protest over the lack of response from government. The department gives very little information regarding possible plans or even why there is such a lack of urgency in this regard.”
Clarke continued “With young children, such as 4-year old Luke Tibbetts from Westbury, falling victim to drug-related crimes we cannot delay any longer in implementing a strategy to combat this scourge.
“Drugs and related crimes are tearing apart communities, families and Gauteng’s social fabric. They are keeping our children out of school and creating fear on the streets of this province.
“We cannot wait for the next Luke Tibbetts to fall victim to such crimes before government tackles this issue with the urgency it deserves.”
