Back to school, back to reality

A look at Randfontein grade one pupils on their first day of big school.

Randfontein grade 1s were met with an unexpected rain shower on their very first day of school.

Parents were in a hurry into local schools with rain jackets, umbrella’s and boots.

There was also little time for embarrassing kisses and advice on how to get through the first day but parents managed to squeeze in those hugs, kisses and calling their little ones pet names.

Children braved the rain and walked nervously on the corridors of their new school. Some laughed and some cried, some even went as far as walking away from their parents in a bid to get away from the smothering affections from over-emotional mothers and fathers. Others clung to their parents’ legs and arms in fear of what big school brings.

This roller-coaster ride of emotions came to an end when grade 1s were snapped digging into their packed lunches and chatting to their new found friends.

The herald visited eight schools in Randfontein and of the eight, seven released how many grade 1s were enrolled for 2015.

• Randfontein Laerskool: 207

• Toekomsrus Primary School: 207

• Randfontein Primary School: 186

• West Gold Primary School: 162

• Hartzstraat Primary School: 145
