The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) squashed rumours about plans to withdraw tablets from schools completely.
The GDE reiterated their commitment to e-learning, emphasising that “nothing will stop our quest or derail our efforts of giving the learners of Gauteng the best possible education in our lifetime”.
Fact is the GDE is concerned about the theft of a large number of the tablets they have distributed to schools as part of the e-Learning Solution Programme towards paperless classroom education. To combat this, they will be installing additional security features in 88 000 of these tablets.
This initiative was announced by Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Education.
The GDE already has withdrawn some tablets to install the additional security features such as tracking devices. The tablets will be returned to schools once they have been safeguarded.
So far this year approximately 6 200 tablets with these features have been distributed to seven schools. In these schools only 11 tablets have been lost or stolen. Five have been recovered and six have not been switched on and as a result could not be traced.
