Out with the old, in with the new

'We want to keep the youth busy. Once you leave them unattended, they get up to no good'.

The Department of Social Development within the Randfontein Local Municipality together with the Gauteng Department of Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation recently donated cricket equipment to the Tshiamo Cricket Club in Mohlakeng.

This after an article was published in the Herald.

“We saw the article in the Herald and this is our response,” said MMC of Social Development, Thembi Patricia Matuwane while holding a cricket bat as though she were about to bat.

“We want to keep the youth busy. Once you leave them unattended, they get up to no good; they become involved in drugs and just walk the streets,” she added.

“The club is passionate about the development of the sport and is using it as a tool to combat social ills facing the youth in our communities. The Herald published an article profiling the club and called for communities to make donations or sponsor the club to help it in its pursuit. This article was well received by the municipality and other cricket stakeholders and positively impacted on-going discussions and plans to take cricket to all communities of Randfontein,” said Sphiwe Mathumbo, Sport and Recreation Facility Programmes Coordinator.

The club received cricket bats, pads, helmets and gloves. Club development officer, Boitumelo Nku also issued the club with a smart development manual to help the club with administrative skills.

In addition to supplying the club with equipment, Mathumbo elaborated on the steps already taken to develop the sport in the Randfontein community.

Steps in place:

• Municipality held a meeting with the Gauteng Cricket Board; the Gauteng Department of Educatio; the school sport D2 Cluster office and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation to discuss the future of cricket development in township schools and at club level in Randfontein;

• The Randfontein Cricket Club (RCC) is currently committed to assisting the club with technical coaching of the game by making available resources and man power from their club;

• The club is to receive skills and coaching training opportunities in order to assist with coaching at local schools;

• The club will receive assistance from stakeholders with affiliation to the correct structures.

Mathumbo stated further, “The municipality will monitor the club’s progress so that interventions can be made possible should the club need them.”
