Artist in an unlikely place

It's a way for me to release what I'm feeling — artist.

An artist is in the making in the most unlikely place and she is reaching for the stars with her talent.

Liru Toureen, a 29-year-old patient at Life Randwest Care Centre spends her time at the centre sketching anything and everything she finds interesting.

Liru, originally from Pretoria, has lived in Randfontein for the past five years and has been at the institution for the past four months. She will be discharged soon.

She said she’s been involved with the arts from a young age and started sketching when she was five.

“I do it because it’s relaxing. It makes me feel better. It’s a way for me to release what I’m feeling.”

Liru has been to art school, was a sign writer for two years as well as a graphic designer. At school she raked in one award after the other.

She not only excels at sketching, she paints as well as do sculptures.

“I love sketching but if there’s paint, I’ll paint. If I had my way, I would do more sculptures.”

The detail in her sketches are down to the T. Her work includes two sketches of two little girls she had made from photos and are almost a mirror image of the girls.

“I use all kinds of pencils for sketching. The only thing is, I have a specific technique. I don’t smudge and shade like other artists usually do; I use the tip of the pencil for my sketches.”

Liru’s work is advertised all around the care centre. She hopes to sell some to make extra money.
