The mine with a heart of gold

'We can build better communities by empowering them' – educational trust.

Sibanye Gold together with the Bokamoso Educational Trust are helping less fortunate pupils to achieve their goals in academia.

We were founded with the sole purpose of identifying, nominating and assisting pupils who are in need of both financial and material resource support,” Augustine Tledima, Bokamoso Educational Trust managing director said.

Tledima explains the trust provides academic support, mentorship, career guidance and life skills. Furthermore, the trust enhances the learning culture among school goers particularly in the sciences.

The trust focuses on three pillars of education, namely ’empower, equip and elevate.’ They believe they can build between communities by empowering their people.

The trust currently runs a programme called Adopt a Child Foundation with the Gauteng Department of Education. To date the trust has adopted 60 grade 10 pupils to participate in the three year programme.

These pupils attend additional tutorials every Saturday at Kgothalang Senior Secondary School in Bekkersdal. The programme is intended for pupils who are studying physical science and accounting. At least 80 per cent of these pupils have subsequently opted for the science stream since commencement.

During the spring holidays (5 October to 9 October) the trust provided revision classes for pupils writing their final examination.

While the program is making progress the operational cost remains a primary challenge for the sustainability of Bokamoso Educational Trust. Bokamoso shall endeavour to establish and build partnerships with the community, private and public sector in order to enhance its capacity to deliver on its mandate,” Tledima concluded.
