Man arrested for hiding firearm

Police noticed he was hiding something in the armrest cabin.

A 38-year-old man was arrested after trying to hide an unlicensed firearm from police.

The incident took place at around 11.30am last Sunday. The 38-year-old suspect was pulled over when police noticed he was hiding something in the armrest cabin of the car.

According to Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the Bekkersdal Police, “The officers asked what the driver was hiding to which he replied to saying he was hiding his ‘stuff’. The officers then requested to search the vehicle after which they found a firearm.

The man could not produce a licence for the firearm or a reasonable explanation for why he has the weapon and was subsequently arrested and charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The man appeared in the Westonaria Regional Court this past Monday and it appears his bail application was successful. He is expected back in court on Friday, 27 November.
