‘It’s a real struggle’ – Resident in fight for disabled parking:

Spar: We have tried using cones, but it gets stolen and if we use chains, it gets broken.

Basil Seltzer, 56, a disabled resident from Randfontein is furious about inconsiderate motorists that park in a disabled zone in front of Randgate Spar.

“This has been going on for a very long time now,” Seltzer said.

Young, strong men park here. They then simply climb out of their car and comfortably walk into Spar where disabled people then suffer and struggle behind them. It is a real struggle. There should be some kind of control over this,” Seltzer said.

Seltzer claims he has gone as far as speaking to the car guard’s management but nothing has come to light. Seltzer suggests they should have cones or chains in place to control this disabled parking space.

Robert Farinha, owner of Spar Randgate says they have tried everything possible to stop this insensitive behaviour from fellow motorists.

“We have tried using cones, but it gets stolen and if we use chains, it gets broken. We even issue disabled customers stickers which they can use any time they visit our store, but this does not seem to curb the problem. I am even thinking that I should put up a big sign that clearly states this parking is only for disabled and elderly, sickly customers,” Farinha said.

The law states the following: If a vehicle does not have anyone inside who is disabled then it is illegal for such a vehicle to be parked in a parking bay that is reserved for vehicles carrying disabled persons, as indicated by the appropriate road sign or road surface marking. That is the law. (K53 blog)
