We all sometimes wish we had a lie detector laying around at home for the moments that we are dying to find out if someone is lying.
The following are ways of detecting if a person is lying:
• Watch the person’s face — If a person’s cheeks are red, they have flared nostrils, nibbling their lips, breathing deeply or blinks rapidly, you can almost be sure that this person is telling a lie.
• Does the body language follow the story — Note the fit between face, body, voice, and speech. A liar may pull his arms and legs inward or keep his movements restricted, just to appear smaller. Also, they would hide their hands behind their backs to avoid fidgeting in front of you.
• Watch how they smile — A true smile is one where the eyes and lips are also incorporated.
• Tone of voice — Although a change in voice can be a sign, you should also pay attention to the speech rate and the breathing. If speech slows down or speeds up, chances are, it is a lie.
• Listen to the type of words that the person use — A liar avoids words like : I, me, mine. They also do not use complex words like, nor, neither, whereas, except.
• Is the person behaving uncharacteristically? You should weigh rate of speech, tone of voice, posture and hand gestures against what you know the person normally acts like.
• Ask a question — If the question is simple and not embarrassing, their is no way that the person would want to avoid your gaze.
