Landfill children get a treat
A restaurant owner with a heart of gold treated children at the Randfontein dumpsite with a meal.
Children from the Randfontein Landfill site were treated to pap and stew by Mike Mudau, owner of Eunimike Chisa Nyama.
The initiative initially started in Delmas where Mike gave food parcels to impoverished passersby every Friday at 5pm or until the restaurant cannot afford to do so anymore.
Mike told the Herald the response with the first food parcel giveaway included many impoverished children. He then decided to focus his resources on children.
I just feel that it makes more of an impact if you can give a child a meal. No child should go to bed with an empty stomach,” he said.
They then targeted children at the Randfontein Landfill site.
“We’re not going to turn the adults away, we just want the children to benefit most out of the project,” Mike explained.
Large pots of pap and stew were taken to the Landfill and children came running with their bowls to get what could very well be their first for the day.
One child from the site came to get his food in a dog’s food and water bowl. A child passing by told him not to worry about how clean the bowl is but rather just to dig in while there’s something to eat.
Once all the children were served, adult stragglers moved in closer to get their share. By the time Mike and his staff left, some of the children of the site were full and started their weekend off with a good meal.
Once the children and some adults were taken care of at the Landfill site, Mike took to the inhabitants of the Delmas bridge to give them a free meal as well.
