ATM bomb blast at new shopping centre

Police: The area was strewn with damaged bank notes.

An unknown number of suspects is sought after the newly built Ntuli Shopping Centre recently was the target of an ATM bombing.

The shopping centre was built in Mohlakeng to make shopping more convenient for the community that previously had no mall within the area. Residents would have to travel all the way to Randfontein CBD to do their shopping. The shopping centre was built in December last year and was built in such a way to accommodate the communities needs, however, suspects took advantage of their facilities and set a bomb off at the shopping centre’s Capitec Bank ATM.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson confirmed the incident took place at around 3am one Saturday in March.

“It is alleged that members of the police were summoned to the area after an explosion was heard.

They found that the ATM was bombed and that the area was strewn with damaged bank notes,” Ernst said.

The bank notes were handed in to the Randfontein Police for safekeeping and the area was searched further for more bombing devices.

“It is still unknown whether any of the cash in the ATM is missing.”

No injuries were reported as a result of the bombing. Official comment is still awaited from the owners of the shopping centre.
