A motorist attempted to be a good Samaritan by giving two people a lift but instead of a thank you, they pulled a gun on him.
The incident took place one Wednesday afternoon in late April, said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.
The motorist picked up the pedestrians, a man and a woman in Ward Street, Randfontein. He took the old Kagiso Road when suddenly the male passenger pulled out a gun, pointed it at him and ordered him to make a U-turn.
“He allegedly was instructed to go to an open area near Bhongweni Village where they were joined by an unknown group of people. The driver allegedly was forced to the back seat where his shoelaces were used to tie him up,” Ernst said.
The suspects took his cellphone, car radio and speakers as well as his bank card for which they demanded a PIN. The suspects left but later returned because the driver gave them an incorrect PIN. They forced him to give them the correct PIN and left once again.
He managed to untie himself at approximately 5.50pm and reported the incident to the Randfontein Police.”
Police later found money was withdrawn from the victim’s account.
“The South African Police Service (SAPS) cannot stress it enough that it is hazardous to offer lifts to strangers,” Ernst said.
Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police Station Commander said rather to be safe than sorry.
