RHS triumphs over private schools

Extraordinary pupils stand out above the rest at the SAASTA Provincial Championship.

The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) invited all schools with an intense interest in debating such as Randfontein High School (RHS) to their Provincial Championship.

The Provincial Championship was hosted by RHS in May.

SAASTA is a business unit of the National Research Foundation (NRF) with the directive to advance public awareness, appreciation of science and, engineering, innovation and technology in South Africa. This challenge included the submission of a speech in essay, video clip and a voice note form based on a topic selected by SAASTA.

The topic for this year was:

‘Do you think Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (HFCT) can improve the quality of the life for all South Africans by contributing significantly to the national energy supply or if HFCT more applicable in industry specific local applications?’

RHS was absolutely thrilled and accepted the challenge as they are however, a digital school passionate about debating and showcasing their talent.

This local prestigious school not only conquered the day but other affluent private schools such as Crawford Pretoria and Oprah Winfrey Academy for Girls as well. They received credit for their consistency, clever word play, clarity and their direct engagement with the topic.

Nkanyezi Sikakhane from RHS was announced the best speaker for her stellar performance; although she stood out above the rest individually, the victory was a team effort.

The team spirit was phenomenal and will give them a head-start to Nationals which presents a grand prize of an all-expenses-paid trip to New York, America. There is no doubt that these pupils will give everything they’ve got in preparation for the big finale.
