Randfontein’s Grade 1s had their first official day of big school.
For some Grade 1s it was difficult to part from their parents and as separation anxiety set in, the little ones were clinging to their parents’ legs.
In contrast, others had a cavalier and grown-up attitude towards their first day and in some instances had to parent their parents, consoling them while tears of realisation that their babies are growing up were flowing.
Either way, learners were separated from their parents and walked unknowingly into classes to meet those who will take on the role of a school mom or dad.
The Herald visited Randfontein and West Gold Primary Schools.
First up was Randfontein Primary (Rem) that had a busy reception area, dealing with the admin side of the first day of school.
The Grade 1s were already in their classes, learning the norms of life in big school. Most started working, sculpting play dough as well as colouring in.
At West Gold Primary parents were lining up as well to sort out school fees and ask questions only first-time Grade 1 parents would ask.
Their Grade 1 classes were pin-drop quiet and already their learners were at work drawing themselves, listening to stories being read to them and colouring in.
While children were in class taking their first steps of a 12-year journey, parents were likely at home or work recovering from the hype of the day as well as coming to terms with their babies not being babies anymore.
