The accused in the #PoppieMurderCase, Kobus and Louisa Koekemoer, appeared together for the first time in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 25 January.
Both Kobus (Poppie’s stepfather) and Louisa (Poppie’s biological mother) were arrested in connection with the blue-eyed little girl’s tragic death in Brits last year. Poppie died on the way to a hospital in the area as a result of her injuries.
The autopsy report mentioned “a blunt blow to her head”. It was also mentioned that there was definite physical abuse.
The Herald attended the proceedings today, where newspaper and television reporters as well as several support groups for Poppie gathered in Court A, after the proceedings were moved from Court C. There seemed to be some confusion about whether Kobus would attend the proceedings at all since he was admitted to hospital on Thursday after it became apparent that he had slit his wrists.
Despite the shocking twist, he did make an appearance – with the marks on his wrists clearly visible. He also had bandages around his ankles, and was still wearing a hospital tag. His hair was shaven and he has definitely lost weight.
Louisa entered the courtroom first, followed by Kobus. Most of the time, she looked down at the floor.
Hanna Conradie, the State Prosecutor, after a brief discussion about Kobus’ legal aid, asked if he would be getting legal aid, which he had previously had, because this representative had allegedly withdrawn from the case.
It is now believed Kobus will be getting legal aid as he signed the required documents. Louisa already has an attorney.
The case was postponed to 21 February 2017. After the proceedings, Kobus was allegedly taken back to the hospital.
There is also a possibility that the case will be heard in the High Court.
