The Randfontein Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for being in possession of a vehicle stolen in Roodepoort.
It’s said one of the Randfontein Police officers was busy with his routine crime prevention rounds in the Randfontein Central Business District (CBD) when another officer radioed him about a stolen white VW Polo Vivo, with the registration number BW 42 MW GP.
It was discovered the vehicle had been stolen in Roodepoort in November last year.
The officer later came across a vehicle with the exact description and managed to pull the driver over. After confirming the description, he arrested the driver, on a Friday afternoon in early January.
Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson, said the man was arrested and charged for being in possession of a stolen vehicle.
This is the second arrest pertaining to stolen vehicles within the Rand West City Local Municipality borders.
The first the Herald reported on occurred in Bekkersdal, also in early January, where two men aged 35 and 44 were arrested.
According to last year’s crime statistics, vehicle theft increased by 22,7 per cent when Randfontein’s and Westonaria’s statistics were combined. Seeing police from both sides of Rand West making an early effort to curb these crimes might mean more positive results for the 2017 crime statistics on vehicle theft.
