25-year-old Thabang Ramodisane was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for stealing a piece of cheese worth less than R200.
The incident took place on 22 January at Shoprite in Ntuli Street, Mohlakeng.
“He was found in possession of cheese which he had failed to pay for,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson.
Warrant Officer Karlien Coombe investigated the matter and said the sentence was unexpected considering the stolen goods were valued at less than R200.
“Theft is never a good idea. A criminal record is the only thing that the accused gained from this theft,” she said.
Randfontein Station Commander, Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela congratulated Coombe on the outcome of the case.
“We appreciate our colleagues at the National Prosecuting Authority for the stance they took in this case. It should be a wake-up call to other shoplifters in the Randfontein area,” he said.
