Warrant Officer Raymond Sebonyane, Westonaria Police’s spokesperson, is concerned about the latest vehicle hijackings on the N12 and R28 near Westonaria.
“The number of hijackings and theft of motor vehicles is very high,” Sebonyane told the Herald.
“There is also a white Polo sedan, with three to four occupants, driving around and impersonating police and traffic officers. They demand to see the motorist’s driver’s licence, and then suddenly point at the victim with a firearm,” Sebonyane continued.
They then hijack the vehicle, drive off, and later leave the victim in the veld somewhere.
The Westonaria Police are now issuing safety tips for motorist to avoid being hijacked:
• Do not stop anywhere on the road for a unmarked vehicle. Rather drive until you reach a safer place like a nearby police station or petrol filling outlets, where there are other people present. If you’re suspicious, contact the police. Give your exact location and contact number to the operator while you are on the line.
• Always keep your windows closed and doors locked. At all times, avoid stopping at remote places and do not rush to the red robot, glide over it. Vehicles are hijacked when they are at a standstill.
• If strangers loiter near your driveway, rather drive past. If they keep on loitering, report it to the police.
• If you are approached by a stranger while you are in the car, drive off as soon as possible, or sound the hooter to attract attention.
