2018 school year: Latest on what parents must know

Hurry, time is running out! Parents only have until midnight on 12 June to submit the 2018 school applications for their Grade 1 or Grade 8 children.

A total of 190 000 applications for Grades 1 and 8 have already been successfully processed, the Gauteng Provincial Government announced on Thursday, 4 May.

This is more than half of the 350 000 applications expected for the 2018 school year.

According to Oupa Bodibe, the Gauteng Department of Education’s Acting Head of Communication, “Reaching this milestone in one-and-a-half days is significant and justifies the shift to online application. With manual applications this milestone would only be reached in about three months.”

He added, “The success can be attributed to the modifications and improvements made to the system, including but not limited to, the establishment of 65 admissions centres across Gauteng. Despite this, we have identified a few minor errors on the system, namely:

• Incomplete waiting list numbers

• Parents receiving WAB list numbers; meaning that addresses could not be found.

• Isolated cases where the system shows schools far from the home or work address of the parent.

“However, all of these issues have been resolved. The Department will re-issue SMSes to parents with incomplete reference numbers and WAB list numbers. Our technicians are working on the system round the clock. However, should parents still be experiencing problems, they are welcome to email gdeinfo@gauteng.gov.za or call 0800 000 879 to discuss the nature of the issue. Parents are continuing to be assisted via the 65 operation centres.”

Parents are reminded to submit the following documents to the school within seven days as of Wednesday, 3 May:

• ID copies of parent/ guardian

• Learner’s birth certificate

• Latest school report (applicable to Grade 7s)

• Proof of work or home address

• Immunisation card (applicable to Grade 1s)

• Proof of guardianship of the learner, if not biological parents

• Parent/ Guardian passport/Asylum Seekers permit for non-South African Citizen

Parents that have not yet applied for Grades 1 and 8 must do so as soon as possible. The closing date is the 12 June at midnight. Parents with learners in Grades 2 to 7 and 9 to 11 are reminded that they can re-enrol their children at their schools.
