A 24-year-old man has been arrested by the Bekkersdal Intervention Team for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The young man was arrested on Monday, 29 May in Bekkersdal, after the Intervention Team followed up on information supplied by the community.
Sergeant Libudi Nong and Constable Maditaba Ngakane were conducting their normal crime prevention duties when they received the tip-off.
Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police’s spokesperson, said they followed up and found a man walking along Johnson Street, Bekkersdal, carrying a firearm.
“The male person met the description given to the police,” Lefakane said.
The officers requested permission to search him, and found the firearm on his person was not licensed. The man was subsequently arrested.
“He was charged and he made his brief court appearance at the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on 30 May,” Lefakane said.
