Cattle stolen from smallholding

Police urge farmers to safeguard their plots and farms following a recent stock theft incident.

The Bekkersdal Police and Stock Theft Unit are investigating a case of stock theft in the area.

Shortly before midnight on Thursday 10 August, a 78-year-old woman woke up only to find that one of her bulls and four cows were missing from her smallholding .

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson confirmed, “It is alleged the victim got the shock of her life when she found out her kraal was empty. Her tenant had informed her he had heard the sounds of cattle being moved. Further investigation revealed that the fence had been cut open and there were cattle tracks leaving the smallholding.”

The suspects are unknown at this stage.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is requested to contact the Bekkersdal Police on 011 755 0000/ 5/ 6 or Crime Stop on 08600 1011. Alternatively, contact the Stock Theft unit on 071 603 9012.

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, Bekkersdal Police Station commander urges plot and farm owners around the Waterpan and Zuurbekom areas to strengthen security measures and ensure their livestock have distinctive markings.

“This will assist in identifying the stock in cases where suspects are brought to book,” he said.
