UPDATE: Water crisis – The end is in sight

UPDATE on R'fontein's water crisis. Municipality advises water supply should be back to normal in a few hours.

Early on Tuesday morning, 19 September, the Randfontein community woke up to a water crisis, but things are looking up.

All areas of Randfontein are currently experiencing low pressure water supply, and some have no water at all due to a damaged pipe.

Tshidiso Tlharipe, the municipal spokesperson, has confirmed that a cable installation contractor hit one of the town’s huge supply pipes with an underground drill.

The water issue by Tuesday afternoon.

By Tuesday afternoon, Tlharipe also confirmed that the contractor, who is installing optic fibre, and the municipal Water and Sanitation section, have made headway on addressing the factors that contributed towards the low water pressure.

“The process of excavating and identifying the affected pipe has been completed and a new pipe is currently being installed. The municipality promises to continue to update the community on the steps towards restoration of the water supply in all areas. The municipality would like to apologise to the community for the inconvenience caused but unfortunately cannot indicate when the water supply will be back to normal.”
