Man beaten to death at sports ground

Suspected burglar dragged to Zenzele sports ground, assaulted and killed, police say.

A man died in a mob justice attack at a sports ground in the Zenzele area recently.

Community members in the Zenzele area were allegedly responsible for the death of the person.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, said, “The body of a 24-year-old Zenzele resident was found in the early hours of Monday, 11 September. There were allegations after the recovery of the body that mob justice was the cause of death.”

Ernst said the Randfontein Police were called to the sports grounds in Zenzele where they found the deceased lying on the ground.

“He had already been declared dead by local paramedics. The victim was allegedly accused of a burglary in the same area and dragged to the sports grounds. There he was assaulted by community members until he died. Mob justice and the taking of the law into one’s own hands is strongly condemned.

The taking of a human life can never be justified,” Ernst continued.

Brigadier Manamela, Randfontein Police Station commander added, “We are appealing to the communities to rather hand suspects over to the police for investigation and prosecution. One crime can never be justified by another.”

Warrant officer Thabiso Duiker is investigating the “senseless murder”. He may be contacted on 011 278 8100 with any information pertaining to the matter.
