Tshiamo, 10, playing the saxophone like it’s no big deal

Meet 10-year-old Tshiamo who has been told to never stop playing because he is that good!

Tshiamo Mokoma, 10, playing the saxophone is music to our ears.

In 2015, Tshiamo started playing the recorder, and shortly after decided to play the saxophone as well. He attends classes in Soweto on a Saturday and participates in a variety of competitions.

He is a learner at the Randfontein Christian Academy and is a real inspiration to his fellow learners.

His music school, the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra, operates in Soweto and Johannesburg and responds to the needs of the youth in all communities by providing a centre of musical excellence in orchestral training and a meeting place for almost 700 young people with musical aspirations. The value of music training is undeniable. Children who learn music have an advantage over their peers in terms of emotional, intellectual, and cognitive skills and abilities. The orchestra gives young people opportunities to learn, create and participate in music and reach their full potential.

Recently, Tshiamo obtained a diploma with his saxophone at the Johannesburg Festival for the Advancement of Music. His adjudicator complimented him on his upper register and advised him to never stop playing.

Tshiamo told the Herald that he loves the tone and the sound the saxophone produces while he is playing. He added that the saxophone is not a common instrument to play and that is why he believes that his talent is extra special.

In order for him to be successful, Tshiamo practises every day. He told the Herald if you want to be good you can practise an hour a day, but for him to be excellent, he practises two hours a day.

He wants to play in an orchestra one day, and become a world-class player.
