The case involving the rather mysterious death of Gerhard Kotze, 63, dubbed the Shallow Grave Murder, will be heard in the Johannesburg High Court on 9 February. Two of Kotze’s relatives are suspects in the case.
On Thursday, 1 June, Kotze’s remains were dug up from a shallow grave on a plot in Pelzvale. He was first reported missing on 28 April 2017. DNA results confirmed Kotze’s identity.

In December 2017, a man and a woman charged with the murder briefly appeared in the Randfontein Regional Court.
Regional Magistrate Ettienne van Niekerk was presiding. Detective Warrant Officer Rupert van Zyl, the investigator in this case, was also present. Advocate Carel van Heerden is representing both the accused.

The man, 34, was denied bail after his arrest on the same day authorities had dug up Kotze’s remains. The middle-aged woman, who was arrested on 27 September, applied for bail on 17 October 2017, which was also denied.
Both the accused have allegedly been living on Kotze’s property.
