Man arrested for illegal firearm, ammunition

Another illegal firearm was taken off the streets of Randfontein when police arrested a man over the weekend.

A 42-year-old man was arrested by Bekkersdal detectives over the weekend for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“It is alleged that detective Constable Skhumbuzo Myeni received information about a person in possession of a firearm.

The member followed up on the information with help from detective Constable Nhlanhla Ngobeni, which led to the arrest on Sunday,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

The suspect could also not show police a licence for the firearm.

He has been charged for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 16 January.

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, the Bekkersdal Police station commander commended the member for good work and not hesitating to follow up on information.

“This is the kind of attitude we expect from all the police members as these firearms are used to rob and kill people on a daily basis,” he added.
