On Tuesday morning, Danél Rooskrans’ ex-boyfriend and alleged killer appeared in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court for a bail application.
The Herald noticed heavy police presence at the court, presumably to prevent a repeat of the unrest during the suspect’s previous court appearance on Tuesday, 9 January. The family, friends, representatives from Woman against Women and Child Abuse, the Toekomsrus Youth Forum and a Krugersdorp organisation fighting for the rights of abused woman and children were also present.

Rooskrans’ mother, Maureen and her father Dudley Michaels were among them. Community members who had made posters on which they strongly expressed their views about the murder were allowed to take them into the courtroom. The State Prosecutor spoke to the crowd, and this time the court proceedings went smoothly.
The suspect appeared briefly, wearing the same clothes he had on during his previous appearance.

Police formed a protective barrier between the suspect and those in the public gallery.

The case was postponed again, this time until this Friday, 19 January, because the suspect said he was in the process of appointing a private lawyer. The state was adamant that the case could not be postponed again, and that the suspect needed to have a lawyer when his bail application is heard on Friday.

Rooskrans was brutally murdered at a house on Venus Street, Toekomsrus on New Year’s Eve. Police confirmed that she was beaten with a garden tool, allegedly by her boyfriend. The Herald was told by another source that the suspect is her ex-boyfriend.
Rooskrans’ funeral was held in Toekomsrus on Saturday, 6 January.
