Community catches criminal

A criminal will face charges of housebreaking and theft thanks to the Zuurbekom community.

A 36-year-old suspect is in police custody and will face charges of housebreaking and theft thanks to the Zuurbekom community.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said at about 1pm on Sunday, 21 January, the victim left his place of residence to go to a nearby plot.

“Later he noticed a group of people chasing after an unknown man. He made inquiries and was surprised to be handed the cellphone he had left charging at the house.

He was told the man had broken into his home. The victim found other items belonging to him in the suspect’s possession as well. The matter was reported to the police and a case of housebreaking and theft was registered.”

The suspect is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 23 January.

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, Bekkersdal Police station commander commended the community for the arrest, but said, “It is good to effect arrests and bring the perpetrators to book, however, we must refrain from taking the law into our own hands”.
