Herald reporter, Maritza van Zyl’s car was broken into on Monday night in Witpoortjie, Roodepoort, and the laptop she was borrowing from a friend was stolen.
Van Zyl, who said the incident happened while she was at her friend’s home in a complex, said she only spent 20 minutes there, and got the shock of her life when she returned to her car.

“I was at my friend’s home between 5.30pm and 5.50pm. The problem is, my friend’s flat is on the second floor, and there are quite a few people around. When I went to leave, I immediately saw shards of glass lying around my car with no one around. We heard absolutely nothing, and by that time it was dark.”
She said when she arrived at her friend’s home, she was warned about a suspicious person who has been lurking around the area.
“This person also told me that the thieves use a particular method of breaking into people’s cars without any detectable noise. I cannot recall how he said they do it, but obviously whoever broke into my car did not use a brick – the residents and people entering and leaving the complex would have heard the noise.”
Van Zyl suspects the culprit may be a resident of the complex, bearing in mind that the main gate can only be opened with a remote. She added the incident will cost her close to R3 000 as she will be obliged to replace the friend’s laptop and her car window.
“It just shows you that you should take these things to heart and never leave valuable items in the car, especially where they can be seen by anyone,” Van Zyl said.
