A 25-year-old Bekkersdal man has been sentenced to two years in prison for assaulting a younger man in September last year.
Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the case of assault with intent to do grievously bodily harm was concluded in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 15 March.
“Tshegofatso Seripe, also known as Stompi, from Bekkersdal stabbed the 22-year-old Nkosinathi Mamella, also from Bekkersdal, during an incident which occurred at about 6.40pm on 26 September 2017.
It is alleged the accused had a misunderstanding with the victim over a watch and keys that the victim was in possession of.
“The victim allegedly gave the items back but the accused got angry and took a beer bottle and stabbed the victim in his neck. A case was registered with the police and the accused was arrested a month later, on 13 October. Through investigation led by detective Warrant Officer George Phiri, the case was finalised.”
Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, commended the member for a job well done and thanked the prosecution team for the sentence.
“This must be an example to the community of Bekkersdal as they do not take assault as a serious offence.”
