Randfontein SASSA employees have joined the national strike demanding a 16 per cent wage increment.
On Tuesday morning, 19 June, the Herald caught up with the employees in Randfontein before heading off to the SASSA head office in Pretoria.
In a peaceful strike, they demonstrated their grievances and said they want a danger allowance equal to 30 per cent of their salaries.

Nhlanhla Mapogo, the spokesperson for the Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA) for the West Rand, said their employer has not engaged its employees on these grievances.
“We want a one term agreement for the wage demand,” Mapogo said.
He said it is quite unfortunate that the employers do not seem to be ready to meet the employees halfway.
“Instead, the employer wants us to accept the wage offer that has been accepted by general public servants. SASSA is classified as a parastatal, so we are not public servants.”
Asked about the danger allowance, Mapogo said many members, particularly those who work in the field, are often the targets of abuse from the clients.
“These are mostly people who are mentally unstable,” he said.
Mapogo also said members are at risk of being hijacked when they go on site.
