Fallen tree leaves home at risk

A home owner's pleas have fallen on deaf ears for four months – since a branch of a tree damaged the palisade fencing around her house, and she now fears for her life.

A Randgate property owner’s palisade fence was damaged when a branch of a tree fell onto it during a municipal clean-up in the area – four months ago.

Kathy van der Berg, 46, who said the damage will set her as back about R5 000, said her pleas to the municipality to attend to the damage are being ignored.

Kathy said it has been four months since her property was damaged, and she is living in fear, as criminals now have easy access to her property. Mostly, she fears for her children and her pet as the positioning of the bars can result in serious injuries.

“The incident happened on 14 March, when the municipal workers were cutting the tree back. Since then, they have been sending SMSes, saying that there was an ongoing protest within the municipality and they could not come to my assistance. I am still waiting four months later,” she said.

Kathy also said that even though the damage that was done to her property was acknowledged, there has been no sense of urgency on the municipality’s part for the matter to be rectified.

“The person who was here at the time of the incident told me there are people in the municipality who know what to do in these cases, and that someone would be sent to fix the palisade.”

Kathey went on to say that even though the person who eventually came was sympathetic, nothing has been done and her please have been ignored.

In a letter that Kathy sent to the municipality, she said even though she had asked the people cutting back the tree to be careful, her property still suffered damage.

“This puts me and my family in danger, as anyone can gain entrance to my property. We would be very grateful if this matter could be handled urgently, as we no longer feel safe in our home,” she concluded.
